Varsity Recap - Sept 9th

Norcross Dominates Roswell

The Norcross Blue Devils won the “Battle of Holcomb Bridge Road” by beating Roswell High School 49 -14 before a very enthusiastic crowd at Blue Devil Stadium last Friday night. Blue Devil quarterback Joe Wilber threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers in the first quarter and the boys from the Gwinnett side of Holcomb Bridge never looked back.

It was a very special edition of Friday Night Lights. Before the game, Norcross’s orchestra played a stirring rendition of America the Beautiful commemorating 9/11. It was also Youth Night. Little league players joined the Blue Devils as they ran onto the field and eighth graders joined the Blue Devil Band, so everyone was fired up and ready for the battle between Norcross and its Fulton County neighbors.

Wilber began his blitzkrieg-like aerial assault with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jason Crooms. The Blue Devil defense, led by Tanner Maloof and Tommy Tate, then forced the Hornets to punt after three plays. Wilber then threw a 30-yard touchdown strike to Anthony Autry who thrilled the crowd with a brilliant twisting and turning run into the end zone. JT Tolbert then caught a 40-yard touchdown pass and thrilled the crowd with his own amazing run for the third touchdown of the quarter. Mr. Automatic, Chris Bingham, made all his extra points, so Norcross led 21-0 after the first quarter.

Domonique Mason and the rest of the Blue Devil defenders continued to shut out Roswell in the second quarter. When the Blue Devils got the ball, they showed their offense included a rugged ground attack when Wilber and Alvin Kamara took turns running through the Hornet defense in a 70-yard drive which culminated in one-yard Kamara touchdown run and a 28-0 lead.

Coach Maloof decided to give Wilber’s arm and legs a rest in the second quarter and put in Bo Swanson at quarterback. Swanson’s first play of the game was a beautiful 75-yard touchdown pass to Jason Crooms.  The score at halftime was Norcross 35, Roswell 0.

Norcross added two touchdowns in the second half including an amazing 95-yard kickoff return by Myles Autry. Roswell was able to score a couple of touchdowns in the fourth quarter against the Blue Devils’ younger players, but the battle had been won by that point. Final score: Norcross 49, Roswell 14.

Stay tuned to this Blue Devil team. They are 3-0 and running on all cylinders. The offense is loaded with weapons and the defense is mean and nasty. 2011 could be a very special year for Norcross High School and the whole Norcross community
